Although I have experienced many wonderful vacations over the years, it was a recent trip to California that was the perfect family vacation for me.

We flew into San Francisco, where we rented a car and hit the road. We started our perfect family vacation by driving along a coastal road and watching the fog lift to reveal the ocean in all its immensity and beauty. We then stopped at a cute little restaurant where we could gaze out at a harbor filled with boats coming and going.

After a delightful meal we headed further South where we visited an aquarium. What an amazing place to see. There were sting rays you could touch, little sharks that would stick their heads out of the water to look up at you, and all other kinds of sea life. It was an experience that will stay with me throughout my life.

Upon returning to San Francisco we walked along the beach front and took pictures before calling it a night. The next day we headed to Alcatraz for a tour. It was fascinating to see how the prisoners there had lived. We also had the opportunity to meet an author who had written a book on Alcatraz that included information about the famous inmates from there. He signed our copy and I had most of it read before we returned from our vacation.

The next jaunt in our perfect family vacation was the Winchester Mystery House. There is nothing else like it. It was built by the widow of one of the Winchester heirs. She lost her small child and then her husband within a short time of one another and went crazy. She believed that the only way to keep bad spirits at bay was to continuously build on her house. This meant building around the clock and adding rooms, closets, etc. randomly, continuously expanding. There is a staircase that goes nowhere (it connects with the ceiling), a door on the second floor that opens into midair, and a cupboard that is only about an inch deep. It is a truly incredible house to walk through.

Before catching our return flight and ending our perfect family vacation we explored the Maritime Park. This is along the beach and consists of several old ships you can walk through. They still have small room with signs showing you where the different crew members worked and slept.

This was our perfect family vacation. Everything went well and we enjoyed all of the interesting sights. We all had our favorite parts about the trip, but nothing we did was dull.

A trip to Walt Disney World is not complete without a visit to the Disney-MGM Studios and the Sorcerer’s Hat. When MGM Studios inaugurated this section of the park in 1989, it was created to give a whole new side of Hollywood Boulevard. With a touch of art deco from the minute you walk in, you can take rides that transport you to yesteryears or maybe catch a glimpse of the behind the scenes and how movies are made.

As you walk in, you are overwhelmed with the Sorcerer’s Hat that stands tall, a fitting tribute to the Disney movie Fantasia, apart from this you can’t miss the Earfell Water Tower that looks like a Mickey Mouse. Every aspect of this theme park will make you smile and reminisce those days when you enjoyed all those animated movies with your family. A lovely place to bond with your children and take a sneak peek into things you did not know existed.

If you have planned your trip well, and your Walt Disney World Resort vacation gives you adequate time in all the parks, you can take the Backlot tour. Be warned that it could take up to an hour and the queue at times is very long and frustrating, but if you are a movie buff, you should ride this. Initially you will see videos showing how movies are made, and if you are lucky, you could participate in one of the scene recreations.

Next you hop on a train that weaves through tunnels and passages each with their own share of adventures. The best is the Catastrophe Canyon which will leave you dazzled and baffled and a bit wet. Filled with special effects and water splashing from here and there, this ride is one that everyone will enjoy.

Always been curious to see what goes on behind making an animation movie, visit the magic of Disney Animation or take a chance at, who wants to be a millionaire setting. You can also watch a variety of entertainment shows such as, Indiana Jones or Beauty and the Beast in the amphitheaters. Or maybe catch the Playhouse Disney, which is played live on the stage everyday for about 20-30minutes.

To wet your appetite you can indulge in the Indiana Jones ice cream parlor or have fresh popcorn anywhere in the Sorcerer’s Hat venue. For more interesting food, check out the Catalina’s Eddie in Sunset Boulevard section where you get everything from apple pie to a hot cup of coffee at reasonable prices. But if you don’t want to miss any bit of the show, pick up the food and get to the venue early.

At Disney World, they have thought of everything. If you are restricted to a wheelchair, all rides and adventures are fitted with ramps and you can enjoy them with others. For those who have hearing problems, there are interpretors who use sign language, but make sure to book one at least a week or so in advance.

This little gem of a park is located on the rugged east coast of Maine. The 47,000 acres that comprise it are diverse, ranging from rocky-topped mountain domes, to thick pine forests, to ocean shoreline, to creeks, lakes, and ponds. Acadia is mostly contained on Mt. Desert Island, but it does extend to the nearby Schoodic Peninsula and even Isle au Haut out in Frenchman’s Bay.

If you want to experience varied terrain, including rolling creek side walking, tramping on boardwalks through marshland, and exploring tidal pools at the ocean’s edge, then you and your family might enjoy the Jordan Creek Trail. 4. Leave your car in the hotel or campground parking lot. Acadia has a terrific shuttle system. You can get off most anywhere in the park and re-board when you’re ready. Save on gas and the aggravation of driving too.

5. Enjoy some local culture. If you happen to need a break from the great outdoors, head into Bar Harbor. You’ll find lots of funky little shops, some great restaurants, and even a movie theater or two. If you’re there for the 4th of July, take part in the annual pancake breakfast, town parade, lobster bake, and fantastic fireworks. They come highly recommended.

6. Take a bike ride. Bring your own or you can rent them from one of several shops in Bar Harbor. Then head on over to the park and hit one of the carriage roads. A word of warning… they are all at least a bit hilly, so if you have small children or out of shape family members, don’t bite off more than you can chew. Stick to a short ride around a single lake. Eagle Lake is a great solution.

7. If you have teens, try rock climbing. A couple of outfits in town will fit you with the right gear and then take you out to Otter Cliffs (on the ocean) or Bubble Rock and teach you rock climbing skills and techniques. Great fun!

8. Although when you’re hiking the trails of Acadia, you may feel as though you’re far from civilization, in reality, you’re no more than an hour or two from Bangor, the nearest “big” city.
